What are Dentures?

Dentures are artificial teeth and gums designed to replace missing teeth, providing a functional and aesthetic solution for individuals with tooth loss. Typically crafted from materials such as acrylic, metal, or ceramic, dentures are custom-made to fit the unique contours of each person’s mouth. Whether you need to replace a single tooth, multiple teeth, or an entire set, dentures offer a versatile and effective option. They are particularly beneficial for those who have lost teeth due to decay, gum disease, injury, or other oral health issues, helping to restore both appearance and oral function. Patients can contact the dental office for more information about dentures and to schedule a consultation.

Types of Dentures

There are several affordable denture options to consider, below are some examples:

Complete Dentures

  • Replace all teeth in the upper or lower jaw.
  • Typically made from acrylic resin and designed to rest on the gums.

Partial Dentures

  • Replace only a few missing teeth.
  • Held in place by metal or acrylic clasps that attach to the remaining natural teeth.

Temporary Denture

  • Temporarily provided immediately after tooth extraction.
  • Allow for healing and transition before permanent dentures are made.

Dental Implants-Retained Dentur

  • Implant-supported dentures, also known as dentures implants, are anchored to dental implants surgically placed in the jawbone.
  • Provide more stability and comfort compared to traditional dentures.

Overdenture

  • Fit over the remaining natural teeth or implants.
  • Provide added support and improve chewing efficiency.

Proper denture care is essential for maintaining the longevity and functionality of all these different types of dentures.

Benefits of Affordable Dentures

There are many benefits to dentures, here are some to consider:

Restores Functionality: One of the key denture benefits is that it helps with chewing and speaking, which may be difficult without teeth.

Improves Appearance: Provides a natural-looking smile and supports facial structure to prevent sagging.

Custom Fit: Designed to fit the unique shape of each patient’s mouth for comfort and function.

Removable: Easy to clean and maintain.

Affordable Denture Options: Compared to dental implants, traditional dentures are generally more cost-effective.

Provides Restorative Benefits: Dentures can be a cost-effective alternative to other dental work, restoring both function and appearance.

Process for Denture Treatment

If you are considering dentures to restore your smile and oral function, understanding the treatment process is essential. Here’s a guide to the steps involved in denture treatment, ensuring you know what to expect from start to finish.

Initial Consultation

Your journey to new dentures begins with a consultation. During your visit, a dentist will assess your oral health, examining your gums, teeth, and jaw structure. They will conduct a denture consultation to discuss your needs, preferences, and options, including full, partial, or implant-supported dentures. A personalised treatment plan will be created to suit your oral health and lifestyle.

Oral Preparation

If tooth extractions or other dental work are needed, they will be performed to prepare your mouth for dentures.

Tooth Removal: Damaged or decayed teeth may need to be removed.

Healing Time: The gums require a healing period before permanent denture fitting can be done. However, immediate dentures may be provided to maintain aesthetics and function during this phase.

Taking Impressions

Precise impressions and measurements are crucial to ensure your dentures fit comfortably and securely.

Impressions: The dentist will take denture impressions of your gums and any remaining teeth.

Bite Registration: Measurements of how your upper and lower jaws align will be recorded.

Customisation: You will choose the shade, size, and shape of the teeth to create a natural look.

Wax Try-In for Fit and Appearance

Before the final dentures are made, a trial set is created:

Wax Model: A temporary denture trial made of wax and trial teeth is fitted in your mouth.

Adjustments: You’ll review the fit, alignment, and appearance, and any necessary changes will be made.

Fabrication of Final Dentures

Once the trial version is approved, the denture fabrication process for your final dentures begins:

High-Quality Materials: The dentures are made from durable acrylic or metal, ensuring longevity and a natural look.

Precision Crafting: Each set is custom-made to provide the perfect fit.

Implant-Supported Options: For those opting for dentures implants, the final dentures will be crafted to securely attach to the implants.

Final Fitting Appointment

When your dentures are ready, you return for the denture fitting appointment:

Placement: The dentist will position the dentures in your mouth, ensuring they fit securely and comfortably.

Adjustments: Minor tweaks may be made to eliminate pressure points or improve alignment.

Same-Day Adjustments: Minor adjustments can often be made on the same day to ensure a perfect fit.

Follow-Up Care and Adjustments

Adapting to dentures takes time, and follow-up visits are vital to your comfort:

Initial Adjustments: As your gums adapt, the dentist can make denture adjustments for a better fit.

Regular Checkups: These ensure your dentures continue to function well and your oral health remains optimal.

Long-Term Maintenance and Ongoing Dental Services

Proper denture maintenance will extend the lifespan of your dentures and keep them functioning at their best, addressing your ongoing dental needs:

Daily Cleaning: Use a denture brush and cleanser to maintain hygiene.

Relining or Repairs: Over time, adjustments may be needed to accommodate changes in your gums or jaw.

Transform your smile and regain confidence with expertly crafted dentures. Whether you need full, partial, or implant-supported dentures, the process ensures a comfortable, natural fit tailored to your unique needs. With personalised care and high-quality materials, dentures restore not only your appearance but also your ability to eat, speak, and smile confidently. What our patients ask about Dentures

Got one more? Contact us now or book in for a consultation and and we will be happy to assist.

Q
What types of dentures are available?

Dentures can be classified as either Partial or complete. Partial dentures fit around and are supported by your existing teeth and gums whilst complete dentures are only supported by your gums and for those who have no teeth.

Q
What materials are dentures made from?

Dentures are made from either Acrylic, Acrylic and chrome orother newer materials such as "peek" which is an alternative to Chrome.

Q
How are dentures retained?

Partial dentures are retained by the friction from the adjacent teeth as well as clips that fit around your existing teeth. Complete dentures on the other hand are retained by a combination of natural "suction" and denture adhesives such as fixodent/polygrip.

Q
Can dentures be retained in any other way?

Yes, dentures can also be retained by dental implants which act like buttons or magnets providing the denture with greater retention.

Q
I have a sensitive gag reflex and cant tolerate impressions. Can I still have a denture made?

Those with a sensitive gag reflex need not worry anymore as with our state of the art digital scanners we can now take a dental impression with a high definition optical scanner without any material within your mouth that has to set. This has been a game changer for such patients who have previously struggled to accept dental impressions.

Q
I have heard of 'Flexi dentures, what are they and is everyone suitable for these?

Flexi dentures are type of softer and more malleable denture which makes it a lot more flexible. This works great for some cases but is not suitable for every case. Please book in for a consultation with one of our dentists who will be able to advise as to your suitability.

Q
What are the alternatives to Dentures in replacing missing teeth?

Alternatives to dentures are dental implants or Bridges both of which are fixed solutions to replace your missing teeth.
